AUTISM GEARED ART LESSON THAT WILL PUT A SMILEY ON YOUR STUDENTS FACE

AUTISM ART LESSON FOR VERY LOW STUDENTSArt Lesson for student with poor fine motor skills, in the spirit of Austism Awareness Month

The month of April is Autism Awareness Month, therefore we felt the best way we in Miami could contribute was the best we know how, Art. This art lesson was inspired by another, but we further developed it. The objective is to get students of all levels of fine motor skills to develop their pinching skills and eventually match letters to colors. However, this lesson is more geared as an accommodation for very low students that have problems coloring on a page.

When we first introduced this lesson, some children could not even peel the stickers from the page. The para-professional in the class even felt we were wasting time with these students. She would blatantly just do it for them. “Let them try” I would tell her. As the month went by and the lesson was re-introduced the students became more and more independent from our assistance. Now it gives me so much pleasure to see  those students creating wonderful pictures by following a series of steps. Here are the easy steps to a highly gratifying project for your students and you the teacher. Remember, start with just having students understand how to peel the stickers and place them neatly on the page. A lot of modeling will be needed from you and at times you might have to even dispense the stickers individually to some students.
